Although it is a good policy to cooperate with the police and with government
investigators when you are innocent of wrongdoing, medical care providers
should be wary of answering questions about medical care–related crimes that
they might be involved with, say Medicare false claims, without getting the
advice of a lawyer just to make sure they are not compromising their rights.
Even when just answering questions as a witness or for background, it is
important to keep notes of what you were asked and what information you
gave the investigator. If you have any reason to believe that you are target of
a criminal investigation, or if any of your business partners are a target, you
should discuss the matter with a criminal defense lawyer before you talk to any
investigators.
