FRAUD AND MISCONDUCT

Two federal laws speak to the subject of fraud and misconduct in research: an HHS regulation that requires institutions to develop policies governing misconduct and a National Science Foundation rule governing science and engineering research. This is a fledgling area of regulation, so it is difficult to predict how strong these laws will be in practice. Investigators must be aware that these regulations exist and ask their IRB for their university's policy governing compliance with them.
