Critical Points

* Patients have a right to refuse emergency medical care and to request that life-supporting care be stopped.

* Physicians may follow appropriate refusals of care without seeking a court order.

* Physicians have an ethical duty to seek judicial intervention when patients unreasonably refuse care for themselves or their children.

* Substituted consent will undermine the physician-patient relationship if accepted as a general legal principle.
