Custom versus Fashion

Both obstetricians and their patients are subject to fads and fashion. While there are no properly controlled studies indicating benefits for natural childbirth, LeBoyer deliveries, Lamaze, and other current fashions, there is also no evidence that they are harmful. The physician should accommodate the patient's wishes as much as possible without endangering the health of the mother or baby. Conversely, if the physician believes that certain procedures are medically necessary, they should not be bargainable issues. Physicians should be cautious, however, and consider whether the procedure or medication is medically necessary or just their usual practice.
