Myth 2: Every Physician Is King

This is the belief that individual physicians should be allowed to perform any procedure without outside interference. Hospitals are intended to act as a brake on unnecessary or dangerous procedures, but many hospitals are in such financial trouble that they encourage any treatments that bring in paying patients. Even hospital review can be avoided by moving procedures to physician-controlled outpatient surgery centers. As a result, unnecessary and dangerous treatments are proffered with impunity. The malpractice claims that accompany these procedures raise the premium for all physicians in the same specialty. In some states, for example, the malpractice awards and settlements for radial keratotomies drastically increased the insurance costs for all physicians.
