QUARTERS: Upon arrival at NSCS, students must check in with the Officer of the Day at the Security Office, first floor, Winnie Davis Hall to have orders endorsed and to obtain berthing information and directions. The NSCS Duty Officer is available at all hours, DSN 588-7222/7305 or commercial (706) 354-7305. All military and civilian personnel attending short courses at NSCS will be assigned to a Bachelor Quarters room if available.

Reservations will be accepted up to 90 days in advance for students with a short course quota, and should be reconfirmed 72 hours before arrival. Reservations will be held for 24 hours, or until 1300 the following day if the reservation was made to begin on a weekend or holiday. The Reservations and Message Desk telephone number is (706) 354-7360 or DSN 588-7360.

Government quarters non-availability certification will be provided by phone if the BQ is fully booked. Orders should reflect lodging per diem if the non-availability certification is given. BQ rooms occasionally become available unexpectedly due to cancellations. If a BQ room is particularly desired, students should check with the reception desk upon arrival--even if non-availability certification was previously provided.

For single students on PCS orders attending courses longer than 30 days, BAQ/VHA Entitlement will be terminated on the 30th day when assigned government quarters (i.e., BQ).

Concurrent travel of dependents is not adequate justification for non-availability certification. A very limited number of family suites are available, and all BQ single rooms have double beds; all rooms have refrigerators.

Personnel who obtain off-base lodging without first receiving a non availability certification by phone or upon arrival will be liable for the difference between the BQ rates and their off-base lodging costs.

Information on area motels is available. The room tax in Athens is 10%. IMPORTANT NOTE: During the University of Georgia football season, which extends from September through November, many Athens motels increase their rates on Friday and Saturday nights of home game weekends. Before making reservations at any local motel, you should ascertain the rates throughout the duration of your course of instruction, including football weekends. Keep in mind that the maximum lodging allowance for per diem in the Athens area is $44.00 per day (this is additive to the flat $26.00 allowed for food and incidental expenses). If you are not wiling to bear the extra expense, you are advised to reserve a room in the CBQ (space permitting), find a motel that will not increase their rates on football weekends, or make arrangements to leave town or double up on accommodations for those weekends. At any rate, early reservations are recommended during the football season because of the large influx of people into Athens.

ACTIVE DUTY FOR TRAINING PERSONNEL ONLY. If you are married or have dependent(s) for which BAQ(D) would be payable, it is MANDATORY that you bring with you a Certified Copy of your current NAVPERS 1070/602 (Record of Emergency Data) (front and back) from your service record. This copy is required, even if your AT orders clearly state that you are entitled to BAQ(D), and it will be submitted along with your AT Pay Voucher to support the payment of BAQ(D) for your AT period.

MESSING FACILITIES: GOVERNMENT MESSING IS NOT AVAILABLE, and all orders should reflect maximum meal per diem. Orders can be endorsed at the Brown Hall Bachelor Quarters front desk.

The Wright Hall Dining Room, a division of the Consolidated Mess (non-appropriated fund activity) serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday, and Brunch (0900-1300) on Saturday, Sunday, and holidays.

AVAILABILITY OF PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Athens is easily accessible by both air and automobile. If traveling by air, Athens can be reached via connecting flights in Charlotte, North Carolina, only on USAIR (1-800-428-4322). Additionally, Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport is serviced by all major carriers. There are several van shuttle service companies operating from Hartsfield Airport and Athens. They are located in the ground transportation areas in the airport terminals. Transportation from Atlanta Hartsfield Airport is provided by Athens Atlanta Shuttle, Inc. at a 10% discount with military ID. Reservations may be made at 1- 800-354-7874 or (706) 725-5573. The following rental car agencies are located at Athens Airport: Budget--(706) 353-0600; Hertz--(706) 543-5948; National--(706) 548-9526. Paul Brown Motors, located on Hawthorne Avenue near NSCS, offers a military discount on auto rentals. Phone (706) 548-4960 for information.

REPORTING: Upon arrival at NSCS, students must check in with the Officer of the Day at the Security Office, first floor, Winnie Davis Hall to have orders endorsed and to obtain berthing information and directions. The NSCS Duty Officer is available at all hours, DSN 588-7222/7305 or commercial (706) 354-7305.

UNIFORM DRESS REQUIREMENTS: Uniforms will be as prescribed by the Commanding Officer. Dress uniforms are prescribed for all personnel on Fridays and on certain special occasions (inspections, graduations, guest presentations, etc.). The summer period commences in March and the Winter period commences in December. Civilian personnel attending courses will be expected to wear appropriate attire, similar to that normally worn in the workplace.

CLASS AND STUDY HOURS: All courses are conducted in Russell Hall or George Hall and begin at 0810 and terminate at approximately 1700 daily, with ten-minute breaks every hour and a one-hour recess for lunch.
