Approximately half of the physicians in the United States are employees rather
than private practitioners. While most work for physician-controlled
businesses, these increasingly resemble nonmedical businesses rather than
medical partnerships. This is a recent shift from the historical domination of
medicine by private practitioners. Physician employees must balance their duty
to the company against their duties to the state and to individual patients.
Medical law and professional standards based on a private practice model
provide little guidance for employee physicians.
